ASC Update: Application Due Date Extended for Next Year̵ …

The Associated Student Council has extended their application deadline for the 2018 – 2019 academic year allowing potential applicants two more weeks to turn materials in. Last year, there were twelve candidates for the six ASC positions.

In an attempt to draw more applicants links to online applications as well as general descriptions of open positions will be posted on Canvas soon. The Associated Student Council hopes to receive four to five applications per position, a goal that would triple their numbers from last year.

A proposal for the Dead Day project has been written. As stated, the objectives of the Dead Day are to increase Seattle Central’s final grades, drive student retention, decrease stress for students and improve student/teacher relationships. The current proposal would only take effect during finals weeks when the first day of testing falls on a Wednesday, with teachers expected to either excuse class and have office hours on the preceding Tuesday or refrain from giving extraneous due dates on the Monday and Tuesday of finals week.

The Dead Day proposal does not require any money from Seattle Central College. However, there is an argument on whether teachers should be paid for their extra day off in the quarter. If teachers chose to cancel their class before the exam, it is likely that they would not be compensated.

The project is currently in its Phase One, which is to collect data from students via surveys and petitions. Phase One will end on June 1st, 2018. Then, Phase Two will take place beginning on June 5th to gather support from stakeholders such as faculty, College Councils, the President and Board of Trustees. From June 5th to June 30th, the Associated Student Council will create surveys and tools to measure success rates to be used throughout the 2018 – 2019 academic year.

All student boards in the Student Leadership are interested in participating in the project. The International Advisory Student Council, who specializes in collecting and analyzing data from international students, will offer insights to the Associated Student Council in terms of data.

ASC’s meeting is held on every Tuesday from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Student Leadership Building’s Conference Room (across from campus and above the bookstore). The meeting is open to the public at Seattle Central College.
